The theme of the 2014 Emerson Global User Exchange may have been “Inspiring Ingenuity,” but the core message presented over and over was “Reliability is a core business strategy.” In the day-one keynote, Steve Sonnenberg, Executive Vice President of Emerson and President of Emerson Process Management, proposed the concept of reliability as a business strategy, and a board-level one at that.
This year’s GE Intelligent Platforms user group meeting theme was “Making the Industrial Internet Real,” and the dominant proof point was how the Internet of Things (IoT) is improving asset performance. Held in Orlando from October 27-30, the event focused on Intelligent Platforms’ Industrial automation software and systems users.

This year’s CEBOS user conference was a big deal, and not because I had the opportunity to keynote day two. Held at the Greektown Casino in Detroit, MI, September 24–26, the conference was the first opportunity to broadly address the user base regarding the acquisition by QAD and the launch of the new web-based product MQ1 Elements.
Infor held its annual user group meeting, Inforum, in New Orleans during the week of September 15. At this year’s event the focus was on the cloud. As Infor evolved from being a software company that was a collection of acquisitions to a major enterprise software supplier, many questioned how it would harmonize the diverse portfolio of solutions it managed to accumulate. It has become clear that the current management team led by Charles Phillips has been able to lay out and execute against a strategy of focusing on vertical industries and leveraging open technologies and is now growing the business.

This was the 17th annual event series, which is geared around education and competency in the latest automation and information offerings for Rockwell Automation and partner attendees.
Asset performance is increasingly being recognized as a key to overall business performance and many companies are struggling with just how to manage efforts in this area. Many are turning to the vendor community for assistance. One such vendor is Emerson, which announced on 20 May its acquisition of Management Resources Group (MRG), a key provider of services in the asset management space. This acquisition reflects the continuing focus of the process control and automation sector on asset reliability and management as a growth area.

In February, I had the great opportunity to speak at and participate in QUMAS’s Global User Conference, Connect 2014. Filled with a variety of life sciences professionals, the conference addressed major quality management challenges faced by the industry today. Particularly, much focus was on the rising use and complexity of global partner networks and third-party vendors, and the need for better collaboration capabilities.
