Though production costs are always a concern and a major factor in the decision of where manufacturing/production will take place, there are other considerations, including agility/control and IP issues, that are factoring strategically--as we'll see below in this week's roundup--into where some small companies decide to set up shop.
In a previous week’s article compilation we discussed a recent report published in the Harvard Business Review: How Smart, Connected Products are Transforming Competition. According to that research, connected products are creating a new form of competitive advantage, giving way to new opportunities and leading to a new set of strategic choices for executive consideration. While that all sounds promising, there is undoubtedly a not-so-glamorous flip side. Such efforts to seize new opportunities are met with a series of challenges, and this article discusses a few of the associated risks.

The brain trust that composes the GE scientist team has been busy working on a wearable, high-resolution imaging helmet that would allow doctors to observe brain activity on a cellular level. Due to the device's portability, motor function will be easily mapped as patients move about. While this wearable is still in development, the potential is monumental as the helmet can enhance our understanding of brain function in both a healthy and diseased state.
