Industrial Transformation (IX): Who’s Ready?

Posted by Patrick Fetterman on Wed, Nov 06, 2019

During our inaugural industrial transformation (IX) event, The IX Event, we hosted dozens of companies that are at different stages in the IX journey. They range from enterprises co-presenting with LNS Research about the successes they've achieved, all the way to industrial organizations trying to figure out how to get started (or in some cases, re-started).

One of the key topics of discussion was “readiness” ― in other words, what separates companies ready for a successful IX journey from those that are destined to stumble? Principal analyst Tom Comstock spoke on this topic and led a roundtable discussion about it.

OSIsoft PI World 2019: Moving Up the Stack

Posted by Patrick Fetterman on Mon, May 13, 2019

OSIsoft held its annual PI World user conference in San Francisco the week of April 8, with 2,500 attendees and dozens of OSIsoft partner companies in the exhibition area. This vendor has continued to evolve from its origin as a data historian for process industries to an enabler of data analytics and intelligence for a broad set of industrial companies, and has moved up the stack in terms of data visualization capabilities. Even during a typically heavy industry event season, (and the world’s largest industrial trade show, Hannover Messe in Germany the week before) attendance at PI World increased year-over-year again. PI World is now widely regarded as one of the most important conferences on the calendar for process industry IT and operations technology (OT) professionals.

Industrial Transformation: What Are SMBs to Do?

Posted by Patrick Fetterman on Mon, Feb 11, 2019

LNS Research spends a great deal of our time exploring and writing about Industrial Transformation (IX), including best practices around people, processes, and technology. However, many small and mid-sized businesses (SMB) are not ready for the scope and impact of IX projects – they’re already behind in technology adoption, and don’t have the personnel or budget required to take on a full-blown IX project. These companies however must still compete against larger, resource-rich organizations that are moving ahead with the latest technologies and are seeing step-change improvements in their operations thanks to the new Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions. So, how can SMBs compete?

Posted by Patrick Fetterman on Thu, Dec 06, 2018

Research analysts from LNS attended the Plex Systems Analyst Day in early November at the company’s headquarters in Troy, Michigan. In an unusual move, Plex hosted its Customer Advisory Board (CAB) concurrently, giving customers and analysts a chance to interact directly. This level of direct access is rare among software vendors and demonstrates a strong show of confidence by the Plex executive team. The Plex CAB includes representatives from companies in automotive, metal forming, food and beverage (F&B), aerospace and defense (A&D), and other discrete and batch manufacturing industries.

Inforum 2018 More of the Same – And That is a Good Thing

Posted by Patrick Fetterman on Wed, Oct 31, 2018

LNS has attended the last four Inforum events (the User Conference for Infor customers), and a consistent theme has emerged. At each event, Infor executives review what they promised at the last event, show how they fulfilled those promises (and in some cases exceeded them), and then announce what they intend to accomplish in the next year. The 2018 event held in Washington DC the last week of September followed the same script.
