OSIsoft User Conference 2018: Continued Evolution and Momentum [MondayMusings]

Posted by Matthew Littlefield on Mon, May 14, 2018 @ 11:13 AM

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the OSIsoft User Conference in San Francisco. While the event overlapped with the biggest industrial trade show in the world, Hannover Messe, there was no noticeable impact on OSIsoft User Conference’s attendance. The conference has continued to grow year over the years, and this year the event expanded beyond the regular hotel contract to spread across three separate hotels.

EHS Leaders Face a Digital Inflection Point [MondayMusings]

Posted by Peter Bussey on Mon, Mar 19, 2018 @ 11:49 AM

Earlier this month, I participated in the NAEM EHS and Sustainability Software conference in St. Petersburg, FL. I’ve come to rely on this annual event as the place with highest concentration of people, companies, and content focused on EHS information technology (IT). This year’s event did not disappoint.

Standards in the IIoT: ISA-95 and Beyond

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Thu, Mar 15, 2018 @ 11:36 AM

In our recent work on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and manufacturing operations management (MOM), LNS Research has highlighted the inexorable journey MOM systems are taking as they become an integral part of IIoT-based systems and solutions. Much of this journey, when looked at from the outside, is somewhat haphazard to date as each vendor is doing its own thing. Hopefully, that will change as we move towards MOM 4.0, the seventh life of MOM.

People and Data in MOM and PLM in the IIoT Age

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Tue, Mar 06, 2018 @ 01:12 PM

In my long career in manufacturing operations, I have had many discussions with product design teams for discrete manufacturing. These discussions have ranged from pure delight to taxing because while the product designers were smart and creative they were also somewhat self-centred. Sharing of data has been a natural extension of sharing ideas, goals, and success for those of us who have worked together in design and operations, and data sharing usually resulted  in new products.

OSIsoft Creates New Growth Potential

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Thu, Dec 21, 2017 @ 10:15 AM

Over the last few months, we’ve had many interactions with OSIsoft; we were delighted to attend its recent European user conference in London’s vibrant docklands and followed that up with a number of conversations.  The numerous encounters gives us a chance to look back and consider how things are moving forward for the organization.  As always, OSIsoft attracted a plethora of large industrial companies that are household names to its event, not just to attend but to speak about their successes with PI System.

IT vs. OT: Who Does Guerrilla Tech Better?

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Wed, Dec 21, 2016 @ 11:49 AM

Much of the new technology that is the foundation of Digital Transformation, such as the Internet of Things (IoT), Big Data, Cloud, and Mobility have either their roots or widespread proliferation within the consumer sector which drives volume adoption. It is the consumer market size, which accelerates the evolution of the technology as well as the lowering of the price point. In most cases, the consumer-driven adoption of technology has been spurred on by the technologists within the IT department. For many manufacturers, the value of these new technologies is best realized on the shop floor.

Manufacturing Leaders Need to Show OT Leadership

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Tue, Sep 20, 2016 @ 10:15 AM

It is very clear that the hype of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is here to stay. The IIoT is a necessary starting block for the Digital Transformation that is going to take place across the world of manufacturing in the coming years. Many manufacturing technologies will help to realize this transformation from smarter robots, through 3D printing, to a massive use of data to improve manufacturing processes. The worlds of information technology (IT) at the business level and operational technology (OT) in the manufacturing plant will converge and become intertwined.
