This week we take a look at the growing importance of energy efficiency in the world economy as population growth and economic development continue upward. We also see that, when it comes to getting enterprise software implementations right, there is plenty of common ground whether the function is quality, manufacturing, or financials.
And since it's the holiday season and many people are scrambling to finish shopping, a question to ponder: What would happen if Santa Claus had a quality manager for all that never-ending sack of toys and all those trips down the chimney?
Happy Holidays from LNS Research!
The Economist recently published ABB’s 2013 Industrial Energy Efficiency Review. Manufacturing accounts for a third of the total energy demand globally. While worldwide population continues to rise, as do societal living standards, energy demand will only follow suit. Focusing on industrial energy management—specifically manufacturing process efficiency—is a great industry starting point for addressing energy challenges. Some of the main findings within this research report include:
-
Industry executives say better energy efficiency is critical to their businesses and will be critical in the coming two decades.
-
More and more firms are investing in efficient lighting, heating, and air conditioning—but the proportion investing in efficient plant and equipment remains static.
-
Innovations in process design and execution will also promote better energy efficiency in the future.
- The key to improved energy efficiency will increasingly lie in software rather than hardware.

Coupa Software, a company offering cloud-based financial applications, outlines three areas that it focuses on during deployment as a measurement toward customer success/satisfaction. Though Rob Bernshteyn’s article may be directed at finance or procurement professionals, we believe that focusing on these areas is critical in any software implementation. Peter Theobald of NQA USA puts a spin on the holiday season and explores quality management with a sense of humor. We have all wondered at one point or another how Santa does such a fantastic and efficient job at delivering all those gifts. Theobald has decided to dissect Santa’s Christmas operations and speculate the changes that would arise if a Quality Manager was hired. The North Pole may be turned upside down with the deployment of initiatives such as document control, ISO9001, offshoring certain operations, Six Sigma, and performance management. Read more.

It’s the season of giving, and this little girl wouldn’t have asked Santa for anything different than the present her local high school gave to her, a MakerBot Robohand. While the high school class is usually building robots and deepening their understanding of the robotics realm, this assignment held a significant amount of importance. Designed and 3D printed, the development of a Robohand is quite fascinating. The story of Harmony Taylor and her customized hand. Included below is also a video below that displays a more in-depth description of how Robohands are crafted and how 3D printing has been a great success for this invention.
