The Siemens Approach to APM: Focus on Equipment Reliability

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Fri, Sep 30, 2016 @ 11:44 AM

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a metric that most manufacturers rely on to help them understand how well their manufacturing operations are performing. Almost every discussion LNS Research has with end user clients about manufacturing operations eventually comes to OEE. A key factor influencing OEE is asset reliability. The bottom line is that a poorly performing asset due to poor maintenance can kill your OEE performance. The challenge that many companies face is there are multiple ways to address reliability. That’s why LNS Research is highlighting the automation and Product Life Management (PLM) giant, Siemens, and its approach to equipment reliability.

Rockwell Automation: Its FactoryTalk APM Software Portfolio

Posted by Justine Holt on Wed, Aug 31, 2016 @ 11:00 AM

Asset Performance Management (APM) is a critical core competency for any manufacturer or asset intensive company. LNS Research has designated APM, along with Quality, Manufacturing Operations, Energy Management, and Environment, Health, & Safety (EHS)/Sustainability as a pillar of Operational Excellence. Failure to achieve excellence in any one of these pillars puts Enterprise Performance at risk and failure in in two or more pretty much dooms any chance of achieving Operational Excellence, regardless of how the enterprise defines it.

GE Digital Is More Than Just Predix: Launching Next-Gen HMI/SCADA [MondayMusings]

Posted by Matthew Littlefield on Mon, Aug 29, 2016 @ 10:00 AM

The #MondayMusings blog series provides executive level insights and analysis for the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and Digital Transformation from the previous week’s briefings, events, and publications @LNSResearch.

As of late, GE Digital has been frequently featured on this blog for the advances it has made with the Predix platform (not to mention its entertaining Olympics commercials). However, this post and our most recent briefing was not for Predix, but rather the next generation of one of its legacy products – HMI/SCADA.

Is Supplier Quality Management Disruptive?

Posted by Dan Jacob on Thu, Jun 16, 2016 @ 11:00 AM

Supplier Quality Management (SQM) is a top of mind consideration for quality leaders across industries. When done properly, aligned with best practices, it can also provide substantial increases in departmental, operational, and financial performance. Earlier we discussed the changing role of technology in SQM and introduced possibility of SQM technology as a disrupter.

OEE: Where Quality Meets Asset Performance & Operations

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Tue, Aug 04, 2015 @ 09:55 AM

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) has been discussed a lot in the LNS Research blog from both an Asset Performance Management (APM) and a Manufacturing Operations Management (MOM) perspective. This time I thought I’d explore OEE as a quality metric since nearly a third of our Quality survey respondents ranked it as a key metric (third only behind customer complaints and on-time delivery).

6 Common Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) Myths Debunked

Posted by Greg Goodwin on Wed, Aug 06, 2014 @ 11:48 AM

It’s not uncommon today, if you visit a manufacturing plant, to see large digital displays peering down at the workforce, keeping everyone apprised of some of the key metrics, measurements, and statistics of what’s happening on the shop floor. Listed among these backlit harbingers, you might see a board with three ominous vowels—“O,” “E,” “E,” Overall Equipment Effectiveness. Surely this metric holds great importance to all beneath its glow.

Manufacturing Metrics: First Pass Yield Benchmark Data

Posted by Matthew Littlefield on Thu, Jan 24, 2013 @ 06:00 AM

First Pass Yield is an important manufacturing metric for measuring quality and production performance and there are many benefits to including first pass yield in the manufacturing executive's dashboard. First pass yield is a good measure of the effectiveness of a process and the elimination of waste from that process. Many other measures of productivity and efficiency fail to account for the cost of rework and in many facilities rework can be a significant portion of the time and value added to final production.
