Rapid technological advancements and global supply and demand dynamics have put pressure on manufacturing organizations to evolve. In order to effectively meet today's demand, companies are increasingly taking an integrated approach to business and manufacturing processes with manufacturing operations management (MOM) software.
MOM software is enabling companies greater manufacturing information visibility across the enterprise by connecting automation and other production-oriented systems to the larger overall corporate IT structure like BI and ERP. Through the use of MOM software, companies are better able to facilitate and improve the complete set of end-to-end business processes, supporting production workers and optimizing operations.
LNS Research has had briefings with top vendors in the MOM space, and recently released its Manufacturing Operations Management Solution Selection Guide to aide manufacturing executives considering an implementation. Each week, we’ll be highlighting the strengths and positioning of a different vendor from the guide.
This week, we’re covering Aegis Software, a Horsham, PA-based company known for its electronics and high-tech manufacturing solutions.
A Brief Overview of Aegis Software and the FactoryLogix Offering
Aegis Software’s MOM software solution approach focuses on rapid, turn-key offerings that feature high-speed machine program and data interactions, along with seamless PLM/design information integration capabilities. The company has expanded its geographical delivery and product portfolio capabilities with the November 2012 acquisition of diplan GmbH, improving its advanced production planning and material logistics software functionality.
Major functional areas include full management and visibility of new product introduction (NPI) activities and processes, as well as logistics capabilities that span receiving, shop-floor kitting, and production control. One of the core strengths of the FactoryLogix offering is the ability to take design data from the PLM systems used in the NPI process and track and extend it across the entire manufacturing and product lifecycle.
In addition, FactoryLogix software comes with a vast library of high-speed data acquisition adapters for connecting to process, assembly, and test machinery. It’s notable that this last functionality is present in a large number of manufacturing sites that don’t use the full FactoryLogix MOM suite, as a majority of surface mount technology providers have partnerships with Aegis, and embed the company’s machine programming software into their machines.
Aegis Software’s core industries are electronics and high technology, medical devices, and telecommunications, with emerging capabilities for automotive, consumer durable goods, and industrial equipment industries. Aegis Software takes a hands-on approach to customer integration. Its engineering team typically takes responsibility for customer integration needs with highly detailed, up-front scoping, functional specifications and fixed pricing. We believe that the internal resources and expertise required for this approach will slow the company’s expansion aspirations into other discrete industries.
Aegis Software’s go-forward strategy appears to focus on agile, next-generation MOM integration and collaboration platforms and lightweight/modular ‘apps,’ which align with our vision of where the market is heading.
