Seventh Life of MOM - Refined

Almost four years ago, I wrote about the "7 lives of MOM," a vision into the future of MOM architecture, and how it would be deployed. The 7th life was defined as “No MOM,” where the functionality previously implemented in MOM systems would be distributed as apps across an Industrial IOT (IIoT) platform. This still seems like a good idea to most and the reality is getting closer, but in a different environment than that we had envisioned.

Survey Snippets #2: Two Best Practices in Leveraging a Common Data Model to Enable IT-OT Convergence

Posted by Vivek Murugesan on Mon, Jan 25, 2021

Manufacturing and IT leaders have been pursuing IT-OT convergence strategies for many years now. To reach that converged state, LNS Research sees establishing a common data model including both IT & OT data as an essential step. This common data model ensures that the data leaving the plant from multiple sources and of multiple types are accurate, trusted, and secure.

How'd We Do? Our 2020 APM 4.0 Predictions Reviewed

Posted by Joe Perino on Tue, Dec 22, 2020

Every year, LNS Research puts forth predictions around the key trends in the Industrial Transformation (IX) topics where we focus our research. In the case of Asset Performance Management (APM) 4.0, our 2020 forecast focused on Digital Twins, closing the APM 4.0 loop, the consolidation in the advanced analytics market, the battle for the OT Ecosystem, and the evolution of the OPA market. How did we do? Let’s do our self-evaluation to compare.

GE Digital Keeps it Going with Even More to Come

Posted by Joe Perino on Wed, Nov 04, 2020

GE Digital recently announced a series of products and service enhancements across their Digital Plant Software Applications portfolio. In addition, they released enhancements and new functionality in their Operations Performance Management (OPM) suite for power generation and announced their Remote Operations solution for Power Generation. All of these announcements culminated in a well-attended 2020 Virtual User Conference in October 2020.

ROKLive Virtual Shows What it Takes for Transformation

Posted by Tom Comstock on Wed, Jul 29, 2020

LNS had the chance, like everyone else, to dig into the wealth of content that Rockwell Automation has put together for ROKLive. ROKLive was intended to be co-located with PTC’s LiveWorx event this year. Like so many other large gatherings, the event itself was cancelled and replaced with a virtual event. Software companies have executed different strategies for their virtual events: some scaling way back, others going virtual with everything that can go virtual, and lots of alternatives in between. Rockwell Automation went “…with everything.” As Chairman and CEO Blake Moret said: “the content is extensive with over 100 keynotes, technical labs, and a partner showcase.”

The New Prize - The OT Ecosystem

Posted by Joe Perino on Wed, Jun 10, 2020

In previous blogs and articles, I have written about the new “OT Ecosystem.” Over the past few months I had a chance to observe what’s happening in the market with a number of automation and software vendors, so I thought this would be a good time to revisit the OT Ecosystem, delve deeper into what it is and what it means, and why it is important.

Manufacturers Just Lost 1.3 Million Jobs...Now What?

Posted by Matthew Littlefield on Fri, May 15, 2020

Last week’s job report showed what many of us already knew intuitively. The real economy is bad and will likely get worse before it gets better.

Risk Management and COVID-19 Lessons to be Learned

Posted by Joe Perino on Mon, Mar 23, 2020

"THESE are the times that try men's souls." With all that's happening today in the world, from the coronavirus pandemic to the Saudi-Russian oil price war, to the continuing threat of cyber attacks, Thomas Paine's words seem appropriate. How should we, particularly those of us in industry, put this situation in perspective, and what should we be doing about it?

APM 4.0 and Risk Management — Industrial Transformation (IX) Leaders Connect the Dots

Posted by Joe Perino on Tue, Mar 10, 2020

In my new ebook, “Asset Performance Management and Risk Management,” I argue the case for a more comprehensive approach to Asset Performance Management (APM) that goes beyond reliability. In particular, I stress that reliability is not just about maintaining mechanical and process integrity for the sake of plant performance, but is, in fact, integral to Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS), Operational Excellence (OE), overall risk management extending to sustainable and responsible operations. LNS research into what makes companies Industrial Transformation (IX) leaders, those companies that we call IX Exemplars, reveals four key characteristics

Amazon AWS: Disrupting the Industrial Technology Ecosystem

Posted by Matthew Littlefield on Tue, Feb 18, 2020

In December 2019, 60k attendees descended upon Las Vegas for AWS re:Invent. Just like Amazon Web Services (AWS) generally, re:Invent is fast-growing and overwhelms with its sheer breadth of content. With dozens of announcements and multiple keynotes from senior executives, including an analyst-only session with AWS CEO Andy Jassy, re:Invent has quickly become a can’t miss tech event. Jassy clearly took pleasure in the success of AWS, as he should. Started in 2006, after just 13 years, the division has grown to $36B in revenue, is still growing at 35% compound annual growth rate (CAGR), and is Amazon’s most profitable.
