Hannover Messe 2018: Digital Transformation, Edge, Cloud, and More [MondayMusings]

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Mon, May 07, 2018 @ 12:34 PM

In 2013, the concept of Industrie 4.0 was first touted at Hannover Messe, the world’s largest, and most expensive manufacturing show for exhibitors, industrial automation, and equipment. In the ensuing five years, the halls have been full of hype, everything 4.0 and grand promises of what is coming soon. Thankfully, signals from the Messe this year are aimed at delivery on a commercial scale. The Industrie 4.0 messaging spread across dozens of stands has gone, and the stand holders seem to be ready to deliver the first stage of benefits that Digital Transformation promises.

Infor Innovation Summit Lives Up to Its Name, Validates Digital Transformation is a Necessity [MondayMusings]

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Mon, Mar 26, 2018 @ 12:50 PM

Infor, an enterprise software company, brought together the analyst community at its New York headquarters for another Innovation Summit to share updates on progress and plans for its product set. The Infor senior leadership team, backed by several customers, walked analysts through the entire product portfolio. Often perceived as “the other ERP company,” in the shadow of SAP and Oracle, Infor deserves more credit for innovation and adoption of future trends and technology. Infor was the first of the major enterprise application players to embrace Cloud and user experience, and was a very early proponent of analytics and artificial intelligence (AI). Much of the progress Infor made has been in industries outside of manufacturing like healthcare, transportation, retail, and in standard business functions such as human capital management (HCM). Manufacturing and asset-intensive industries should take note as they will benefit from the advances the software vendor is bringing to the market, in addition to all the Cloud capabilities directly associated with manufacturing in relevant CloudSuites. The Innovation Summit featured several end-users who made it clear they see Digital Transformation as their only option.

Open Process Automation Forum 2018 - A Year to Make or Break

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Fri, Mar 09, 2018 @ 10:33 AM

LNS joined the Open Process Automation (OPA) Forum in early 2017. A year after, here is our assessment on how far the forum has come and what the remainder of 2018 means. The OPA forum made some considerable progress in 2017, but 2018 will be the real indicator of OPA’s success or failure. The most prominent challenge facing OPA is breaking the mindset that the future must evolve from the past in small steps. OPA needs a mutation to change the way the industry needs. There will be winners and losers in any technology evolution, and the next generation of process control automation systems will be no exception.

All New Analytics That Matter Survey from LNS Research and MESA International

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Fri, Feb 16, 2018 @ 10:23 AM

LNS Research is thrilled to launch the first Analytics That Matter survey in partnership with MESA (Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association) International. For the last six years we partnered with MESA on the Metrics That Matter survey, which has been one important foundational element of LNS Research’s primary data-driven research. As the use of plant-centric data has expanded dramatically since the last survey in early 2016, we decided to change the focus from overall metrics to the use of analytics in manufacturing operations and beyond.

2018 Asset Performance Management Predictions

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Tue, Feb 06, 2018 @ 10:16 AM

Every year LNS analysts offer up our predictions on what the year will bring in each of our coverage areas. In 2018 the most significant shift in APM will be the move away from the maintenance-centric approach that APM was born from 15-20 years ago including enterprise asset management (EAM), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and a focus on reliability and downtime reduction to APM 4.0. APM 4.0 with the emphasis on Digital Twins and prescriptive analytics is more about asset optimization than just reliability and availability.

2017 APM Prediction Report Card

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Wed, Jan 03, 2018 @ 09:01 AM

Every year LNS Research puts forth predictions around the key trends in the Operational Excellence pillars.  In the case of asset performance management (APM), our 2017 forecast focused on a new model emerging for APM, which we ultimately called APM 4.0.  In fact, the "4.0" model also became the basis of our EQMS and EHS coverage throughout 2017, because incorporating digital technologies inherent in business transformation today have become core to every element of Operational Excellence. The specific APM predictions were:

More Revenue in Mining Has MOM Vendors Investing

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Thu, Oct 19, 2017 @ 09:15 AM

The last two years have seen fairly steady price increases in both ferrous and nonferrous base metals prices. Given the prices of the rarer precious metals and most minor metals, combined with growing optimism around the rest of the precious metals sector, LNS Research sees the mining industry finally looking to invest in Digital Transformation.

MacGyver Was Educational TV; Learn From the Master of Mashups & Improvisation

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Thu, Aug 10, 2017 @ 11:00 AM

As a longtime speaker and adult education instructor, one of the first lessons I learned about communicating with business people is that to educate them you must engage them, and the easiest way to do that is by entertaining them. Most of us would challenge the idea that prime-time network TV is educational; dominated by with reality competitions, whodunits, and comedy programs. So, you might be skeptical when I claim that Asset Performance Management (APM) professionals should treat a show like MacGyver as “educational TV.” Whether one harkens back to the original series from the late 1980’s or the rebooted version that started just last year (2016), MacGyver has become something of a legend in the TV world.
