AspenTech OPTIMIZE 2019: Aiming Higher to Enable the Smart Enterprise [MondayMusings]

Posted by Joe Perino on Mon, Jun 24, 2019

In May 2019 LNS Research attended AspenTech’s annual user conference, OPTIMIZE 2019 in Houston, Texas. This year's event drew a broad range of attendees ― in all 1,000 from 300 operating companies and ten leading universities, across 50 countries. The software vendor was also joined front and center by a major partner, Emerson, which showcased the integration of its Mimic™ Operator Training System (OTS) with AspenTech's HYSYS simulation software, and its expanding set of asset optimization services for typical customers. With some 150 breakout sessions, it was impossible to cover all tracks, so I spent the majority of the time focused on asset performance management.

Open Process Automation Forum 2018 - A Year to Make or Break

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Fri, Mar 09, 2018

LNS joined the Open Process Automation (OPA) Forum in early 2017. A year after, here is our assessment on how far the forum has come and what the remainder of 2018 means. The OPA forum made some considerable progress in 2017, but 2018 will be the real indicator of OPA’s success or failure. The most prominent challenge facing OPA is breaking the mindset that the future must evolve from the past in small steps. OPA needs a mutation to change the way the industry needs. There will be winners and losers in any technology evolution, and the next generation of process control automation systems will be no exception.

All New Analytics That Matter Survey from LNS Research and MESA International

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Fri, Feb 16, 2018

LNS Research is thrilled to launch the first Analytics That Matter survey in partnership with MESA (Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association) International. For the last six years we partnered with MESA on the Metrics That Matter survey, which has been one important foundational element of LNS Research’s primary data-driven research. As the use of plant-centric data has expanded dramatically since the last survey in early 2016, we decided to change the focus from overall metrics to the use of analytics in manufacturing operations and beyond.

2018 Asset Performance Management Predictions

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Tue, Feb 06, 2018

Every year LNS analysts offer up our predictions on what the year will bring in each of our coverage areas. In 2018 the most significant shift in APM will be the move away from the maintenance-centric approach that APM was born from 15-20 years ago including enterprise asset management (EAM), computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) and a focus on reliability and downtime reduction to APM 4.0. APM 4.0 with the emphasis on Digital Twins and prescriptive analytics is more about asset optimization than just reliability and availability.

The Siemens Approach to APM: Focus on Equipment Reliability

Posted by Dan Miklovic on Fri, Sep 30, 2016

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) is a metric that most manufacturers rely on to help them understand how well their manufacturing operations are performing. Almost every discussion LNS Research has with end user clients about manufacturing operations eventually comes to OEE. A key factor influencing OEE is asset reliability. The bottom line is that a poorly performing asset due to poor maintenance can kill your OEE performance. The challenge that many companies face is there are multiple ways to address reliability. That’s why LNS Research is highlighting the automation and Product Life Management (PLM) giant, Siemens, and its approach to equipment reliability.

IoT in Commercial Aviation Requires a New Collaboration Standard

Posted by Dan Jacob on Thu, Jul 14, 2016

During the week following July 4th, two airlines, flydubai and Qantas, announced that they had deployed IoT systems to optimize flight operations. Flydubai is working with GE Aviation/Predix to reduce the impact of unavoidable delays, optimize flight scheduling, and monitor engine health. Qantas took a different approach, working with the University of Sydney to develop a system that optimizes flight paths to reduce fuel consumption and optimize the airline’s operational efficiency.
