Survey Snippets #6: The Why, What, and How of Industrial Transformation (IX)

Posted by Vivek Murugesan on June 01, 2022

One of the most common mistakes LNS Research sees manufacturers make in their Industrial Transformation (IX) programs is starting with technology selection. To help companies better structure their IX programs, we have designed the LNS Research Industrial Transformation Framework (shown below). Our framework recommends companies manage their IX programs across five key swim lanes:

  • identifying business objectives at the C-suite level
  • establishing strategic initiatives aligning to the C-suite objectives
  • building a robust operational architecture
  • focusing on technology selection
  • embracing change management

Waking Sleeping Giants...Releasing the Kraken

Posted by Joe Perino on February 24, 2022

LNS Research has long followed the major automation vendors. All are either current LNS Research members or have been in the last few years. Recent developments have prompted us to take a closer look at their strategies, what’s happening, and why. We refer to mergers, acquisitions, partnerships, and entering new markets or strengthening positions in certain industry verticals as recent developments. These "giants" are waking up to new challenges as they seek to grow their businesses.

Leveraging ICS Cybersecurity Services

Posted by Joe Perino on September 20, 2021

Last April, we wrote about the market twists and turns in the dynamic cybersecurity software market and the challenges and barriers to progress. More recently, we published an M&A update that noted the acquisition of PAS Global by Hexagon AB. Recent conversations with end-users, cyber-software, and automation vendors have highlighted the importance of not just the software but of the associated set of services so vital to implementing and maintaining cyber protection. This raised the question of the best way for most end-users to approach this, get the right help, and bridge the cyber gap between IT and OT. The answer is less a technical discussion than it is about strategy, standards, policies and procedures, and partnering services.

Oracle OpenWorld 2019: Autonomous Coming to Manufacturing [MondayMusings]

Posted by Tom Comstock on October 21, 2019

LNS Research recently attended Oracle OpenWorld 2019 in San Francisco. One of the mega technology events for the Golden Gate City, the conference took over all three halls at the Moscone Center and had over 60,000 attendees.

Oracle is now over $40 billion in revenue (2018) with over 137,000 employees; it positions itself as the number one supplier of business software. The company is clearly innovating in many directions. The event covers the two sides of Oracle: Oracle, the technology, and Oracle, the applications vendor. Additionally, the firm has sophisticated positioning for “emerging technologies.” So, let’s examine each, and determine if this means Oracle can finally engage deeply in the plant.

OSIsoft User Conference 2018: Continued Evolution and Momentum [MondayMusings]

Posted by Matthew Littlefield on May 14, 2018

A few weeks ago, I had the opportunity to attend the OSIsoft User Conference in San Francisco. While the event overlapped with the biggest industrial trade show in the world, Hannover Messe, there was no noticeable impact on OSIsoft User Conference’s attendance. The conference has continued to grow year over the years, and this year the event expanded beyond the regular hotel contract to spread across three separate hotels.

EHS Leaders Face a Digital Inflection Point [MondayMusings]

Posted by Peter S Bussey on March 19, 2018

Earlier this month, I participated in the NAEM EHS and Sustainability Software conference in St. Petersburg, FL. I’ve come to rely on this annual event as the place with highest concentration of people, companies, and content focused on EHS information technology (IT). This year’s event did not disappoint.

Standards in the IIoT: ISA-95 and Beyond

Posted by Andrew Hughes on March 15, 2018

In our recent work on the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) and manufacturing operations management (MOM), LNS Research has highlighted the inexorable journey MOM systems are taking as they become an integral part of IIoT-based systems and solutions. Much of this journey, when looked at from the outside, is somewhat haphazard to date as each vendor is doing its own thing. Hopefully, that will change as we move towards MOM 4.0, the seventh life of MOM.

People and Data in MOM and PLM in the IIoT Age

Posted by Andrew Hughes on March 06, 2018

In my long career in manufacturing operations, I have had many discussions with product design teams for discrete manufacturing. These discussions have ranged from pure delight to taxing because while the product designers were smart and creative they were also somewhat self-centred. Sharing of data has been a natural extension of sharing ideas, goals, and success for those of us who have worked together in design and operations, and data sharing usually resulted  in new products.

OSIsoft Creates New Growth Potential

Posted by Andrew Hughes on December 21, 2017

Over the last few months, we’ve had many interactions with OSIsoft; we were delighted to attend its recent European user conference in London’s vibrant docklands and followed that up with a number of conversations.  The numerous encounters gives us a chance to look back and consider how things are moving forward for the organization.  As always, OSIsoft attracted a plethora of large industrial companies that are household names to its event, not just to attend but to speak about their successes with PI System.
