Steady Progress: Siemens Digital Industries Software [MondayMusings]

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Mon, Sep 16, 2019

Over the last decade, Siemens has gone through a massive transformation, not least in its software businesses. The current home for its comprehensive offerings is the Digital Industries Software (“Siemens”) division (a part of Digital Industries that includes discrete and process controls, automation, and drives). Siemens recently held its annual conference for media and analysts in New York where it brought us up to date on its impressive progress in software solutions. Announcements primarily related to how the company is bringing different parts of the portfolio together. We don’t perceive that as a lack of progress, but rather a demonstration of ever more sophisticated solutions around the Digital Twin.

Build The Factory of the Future with Industrial Transformation

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Mon, Dec 17, 2018

Industry 4.0, Smart Manufacturing are hot topics for companies gearing-up Industrial Transformation. The goals of these ambitious programs while admirable have a long-term view. Here at LNS as we define our upcoming research agenda and delve into Industrial Transformation, it has become clear that many of our clients are opting for shorter term view than the typical large-scale and expensive Industrial Transformation programs.

The What, Why and How of Digital Twin in Discrete Manufacturing

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Wed, Oct 10, 2018

The goal of a Digital Twin is to have a software copy that behaves as closely as possible to its real-world twin, capturing every single attribute of that physical thing. We are often focused on Digital Twin of a product – because as products evolve their Digital Twin can be updated to reflect the new product, it can also predate the new product. But what about the benefits of having a Digital Twin for assets? Consider a manufacturing plant, we can start with small pieces of equipment that are vital to the production – the more critical that equipment is, the more likely is it that a Digital Twin will deliver benefits. The component, of course, must be significant enough to warrant the (high) cost of developing a Digital Twin or have enough pre-existing models available to construct a first-generation Digital Twin. The key for executives is to understand that Digital Twins can bring immediate benefit to a manufacturing plant (and the products it produces), but they are a long-term play rather than a quick fix.

There’s No Industrial Transformation Without Operational Architecture

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Thu, Sep 20, 2018

Our journey through the Analytics That Matter series has shown that the Operational Architecture is a critical factor in building an analytics environment that can deliver value at all levels (descriptive, diagnostic, predictive and prescriptive). It’s also clear that where Operational Architecture is concerned, one size does not fit all. Operational Architecture is one piece of the operational and data model puzzle manufacturers need to ensure success. Many industrial organizations ask, “Why doesn’t one size fit all?” Let’s explore that statement and explain why right-sizing each element is key for success.

People and Data in MOM and PLM in the IIoT Age

Posted by Andrew Hughes on Tue, Mar 06, 2018

In my long career in manufacturing operations, I have had many discussions with product design teams for discrete manufacturing. These discussions have ranged from pure delight to taxing because while the product designers were smart and creative they were also somewhat self-centred. Sharing of data has been a natural extension of sharing ideas, goals, and success for those of us who have worked together in design and operations, and data sharing usually resulted  in new products.
